BRITISH RIDING CLUBS AREA 1
The Area 1 Summer Dressage and Show Jumping qualifiers are being held at The Daimler Foundation at Morris Equestrian Centre on Sunday 26th July.

As a club we welcome both members and non members to our events, however, non members will be charged higher entry fees and must also have their own insurance. Under 18's entry is specified for each event and they must be accompanied by an adult
HISTORY OF THE SOUTH LAMMERMUIR RIDING CLUB
Originally there was one large riding club called Lammermuir which covered the area south of of Edinburgh to the English border and from the coast to Kelso. The western border joined Ettrick and Lauderdale. the membership became so large geographically that under Doreen Calder, a local land owner and Jack Cameron, a local vet it was decided that they would divide the club into north and south.
The North Lammermuir Club has since ceased to exist leaving just South Lammermuir. Jack and Doreen held the positions of president and chair alternating the two by election at the AGM’S until Jacks death. Doreen continued as the chair of South Lammermuir, with many events held on her land at Marygold, until 2020 when she finally stepped down. Doreen has received a MBE for her service to equestrianism and still offers help and advice to the committee to this day.
EVENTS
Our aim as a riding club is to encourage confidence, offer support, motivate riders to achieve their goals and most importantly have fun. We understand riders are at different levels and compete in different disciplines so always try to offer a range of training and events throughout the year to suit everyone and their equine friends.

MEMBERSHIP
South Lammermuir Riding Club is affiliated to British Riding Clubs. By joining an affiliated club you can take advantage of the opportunities to ride, compete, train and have fun together at club, area and national competitions
We welcome members to join as riding and non-riding members over the age of 18. We currently have about 50 members who take part in various disciplines.

IMPORTANT NEW BRC WHIP RULE
G23.1.1: Whips The use of the whip must be for an appropriate reason, at an appropriate time, on the correct area of the horse and with the appropriate level of response.
Appropriate Reason: The whip must only be used as an aid to support the natural aids in encouraging the pony/horse forward, or to help the rider to encourage the pony/ horse in the right direction. For example, it may be used down the shoulder to keep a horse straight on the approach to a fence. It must never be used to vent a rider’s temper; any use for such a reason is automatically excessive.
Appropriate Time: As an aid, the appropriate time is when the pony/horse is reluctant to go forward under natural aids i.e. seat and legs. Its use, for instance, after a refusal when a pony/horse has turned away, is excessive. Its use after elimination is excessive.
Right area of the horse: As an aid to go forward the whip may be used down the shoulder or behind the rider’s leg. The use of a whip on a pony’s/ horse’s head or neck is always excessive use.
Appropriate Level of Response: the whip should never be used more than three times during any incident; and if the pony/horse is marked by the whip (skin broken or a welt) its use is excessive. (The rider is expected to know if the pony/horse has sensitive skin and must use the whip accordingly). The arm should never be raised above the shoulder whilst using the whip. The whip should always be carried and used in the backhand (handle pointed upwards) position and never in the forehand position (handle pointed downwards).
Misuse of a whip: If, in the opinion of the judge/official, a whip is misused/overused the rider may face up to 25 penalties or disqualification at the discretion of the Official Steward.
